Big Brothers Big Sisters of Santa Cruz County Says Thank You!
2020 has been a unpredictable year but with your support mentoring for the young people that need it most is still happening.
The registration of sailors and boats was all completed online this year as was the Skipper's meeting held on 8pm Saturday night. This year's event included 31 entries in 5 divisions. The format of the race is a pursuit race, with starting times assigned according to each boat's handicap rating. Two predetermined courses were sailed around fixed marks outside the Santa Cruz Harbor, with the larger boats sailing the longer twice-around course and the smaller boats sailing the shorter once-around course. The sailing conditions were perfect for the afternoon. The start of the timing sequence was at 1pm and most boats finished by 3:30pm, in time for the scaled back but incredibly fun afternoon festivities.
On shore activities from 3:30 -5:30pm included music by DJ and Board Vice President, Art Crumpler, a delicious gourmet take away meal by Kiss Catering, apromoting the online auction and $100 raffle, recognizing Sponsors, local businesses and individuals that supported the event, and the awarding of trophies to the winning yachts-all while socially distancing.
SCYC member Bob DeWitt and BBBS Executive Director Aimee Mangan served as emcees for the event and more than 150 people were in attendance. At the conclusion of the afternoon, a drawing for the grand prize in the Special Raffle saw Cathy Menedez win a week vacation at an exclusive timeshare plus $1,500 in cash, courtesy of Patrick Sheufler and the Santa Cruz Surf City Kiwanis!
