Match of the Year 2016

If you ask eleven-year-old Tyler about his Big Brother Dan Fenwick you might have to wait a moment. His first reaction on hearing his mentor’s name is to produce a huge smile on his face. After that, it’s an avalanche of positive words and stories.

Tyler’s Grandmother, Theresa, enrolled him in the Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring program, as Tyler does not have a male in his life and she knew he would benefit from having a caring male role model. Theresa is raising Tyler and she is very grateful for Dan’s positive influence in Tyler’s life. Prior to having a Big Brother Tyler spent the majority of his time inside. Now he and Dan get together once a week and do a variety of activities from body boarding to practicing baseball.  Dan knows it’s important for Tyler to have a trusted adult for all questions and challenges that arise in adolescence.  When asked about being matched Tyler shares, “ It’s just really great.”  Grandmother Theresa has noticed some big gains in Tyler since meeting Dan, like he is doing better in school and has more self-confidence.

Dan enjoys learning more about himself and the world through Tyler’s eyes. He says, “ It makes me feel more fulfilled in my life knowing that I am making a real difference in his life.”  Additionally, Dan is rediscovering sports that he has not participated in for decades and trying new things like skateboarding.  Dan also looks forward to the future with his Little Brother, “There is so much I’m really excited to share with Tyler. But the time has to be right and I’ll let him decide when and what his next interests will be. He’ll probably just surprise me and that will be just fine.”

Dan and Tyler have created a deep and abiding friendship that has benefited both of them beyond words. Big Brothers Big Sisters is proud to honor Dan and Tyler as the 2016 Match of the Year.

Marie Cubillas, Big Brothers Big Sisters Executive Director, remarks: “It is our honor and privilege to recognize the significance of Dan and Tyler as the 7th Annual Big Brothers Big Sistersʼ Match of the Year.  All of our volunteers and families invest so much that it was difficult to select one match in particular. However, Dan and Tyler’s relationship over the last year has been marked by consistency and significant growth. We celebrate them and the other mentors in our program.”
